Why Fall Camping?

Embracing the enchantment of fall camping is a choice you won't regret. As the summer heat mellows and nature puts on its dazzling display of colors, the great outdoors transforms into a wonderland of golden opportunities. With fewer crowds to contend with, you'll have the serenity of the wilderness all to yourself. The cool, crisp air invigorates your senses, and the evenings are made for cozying up by the campfire, roasting marshmallows, and gazing at the star-studded skies. Fall offers a unique blend of natural beauty and tranquility, making it an ideal time for families to reconnect with each other and with nature. So, swap your beach towels for warm jackets, and experience the magic of fall camping with your loved ones. It's a season that promises unforgettable memories and a rekindling of your passion for the great outdoors.

  •  Spectacular Scenery - The foliage transforms forests into a stunning canvas of red, orange, and yellow hues, providing a backdrop like no other.

  •  Fewer Crowds - With summer vacationers long gone, you'll enjoy more peaceful and serene campgrounds.

  •  Mild Temperatures - Enjoy cooler days and perfect sleeping weather at night, snuggled in your warm sleeping bag.

  •  Campfires - Fall evenings around a campfire are simply unbeatable, complete with s'mores and stargazing!!

Packing List for Fall Camping - For RVers and Tent Campers

Clothing

1. Layered Clothing - Pack plenty of layers to accommodate temperature fluctuations.

2. Warm Jackets - Insulated jackets or vests are essential for chilly evenings. A packable down jacket is perfect for fall days at camp.

3. Rain Gear - Don't forget waterproof jackets or an umbrella, as fall can bring unexpected showers.

4. Hats and Gloves - Keep your head and hands warm during colder spells.

5. Thermal Underwear - Ideal for those planning to camp in snow or near-freezing temperatures, if you’re really planning on roughing it!

6. Comfortable Boots - Sturdy, waterproof boots with good traction for hiking or muddy terrain.

7. Extra Socks - Keep your feet warm and dry with extra pairs of woolen socks. We were introduced to Darn Tough socks by The RV Atlas and we LOVE them, they are absolutely worth the price.

Fall camping offers a unique blend of natural beauty, tranquility, and family bonding.

Camping Gear

8. Quality Tent - If you're tent camping, ensure your tent is suitable for fall conditions. And don’t forget to put on that rainfly!

9. Sleeping Bag - Invest in a high-quality sleeping bag rated for fall temperatures. TIP: The temperature on your sleeping bag is a survivability rating - not a comfort rating!

10. Camp Stove - Prepare hot meals to stay warm and cozy. This Camp Chef is a favorite of ours.

11. Campfire Essentials - Firewood, matches, fire starters, or even a propane firepit like we have. Kids love this fun extra for the campfire too!

12. Lighting - Headlamps (we prefer rechargeable), lanterns, and flashlights for those longer nights.

13. Tarps and Ground Cover - Protect your campsite from moisture. I like to bring a thick rubber doormat to put in front of our tent or RV to help keep mud, dirt and leaves outside.

14. First Aid Kit - Always have a well-stocked kit on hand.

15. Camp Chairs and Tables - Comfortable seating for enjoying meals and campfires. This Kelty Camp Loveseat is perfect for keeping warm with your loved ones on those chilly nights!

Packing Checklist for Fall Camping

Decorating for Halloween and Thanksgiving

16. Halloween Decor - String lights, spooky decorations, garden flags, and carved pumpkins can set a festive mood.

17. Thanksgiving Table - Bring along a foldable table and chairs for your family feast. TIP: One of my favorite memories is when my mom put me in charge of decorating our Thanksgiving camping table one year - do the same for your kids and put them in charge of the decor! You can provide brown grocery bags, markers, scissors, stickers, etc. to help spark their creativity!

18. Fall-themed Decorations - Consider autumn-themed tablecloths (cozy fall blankets are PERFECT for picnic tables), lights, fresh floral centerpieces, garden flag, and seasonal camping decor.

Snow or Sunshine Preparedness

This time of year can be a dramatic temperature difference between various regions of North America. While some of you may be dealing with snow, others might be worried about the heat still. Here are a few more items you might need to pack, depending on conditions.

19. Snow Gear: Snowshoes, ice cleats, and a snow shovel if camping in snowy conditions.

20. Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and sun hats for sunny days.

By preparing for anything with this comprehensive packing checklist, you'll be well-equipped to enjoy all the wonders of the season, whether you're RVing or embracing the simplicity of tent camping.
