Over the weekend the Liebster blogging award was passed on to us. You've heard of it right? Yeah, we hadn't either. But after a Google search and some reading we discovered it is basically a FUN way to get to know fellow bloggers. From what we've been told it goes something like this -
The Liebster award is passed around the blogging community to support, encourage and get to know each other and our growing blogs. Here’s how it works: You answer the questions I've created for you. Then, you nominate other bloggers who are just getting started and ask them 11 new questions. Let them know via social media. They thank you, link back to you, and then do the same!
The word “liebster” is of German origin and it has several definitions including - dearest, sweetest, kindest, nicest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and sweetheart.
We were nominated by Michelle over at
. And thank you so much!! Michelle and her husband out number us by one, they have four little boys including a set of twins. Maybe it's the twins that make us all so adventurous? If you haven't already visited Michelle's blog you need to stop everything and go now! It is packed full of their explorations over the past few years. Michelle and her family have recently replanted roots in Utah, lucky ducks, and haven't skipped a beat in sharing even more information and adventures. Seriously, go check her out now and don't forget to follow A Local Wander on
Now to answer Michelle's questions to us:
1. Explain the name of your blog.
Actually, when we first started thinking of a blog name we wanted Campfire Explorers because it combined our two favorites things - campfires and exploring. But, of course, the name was taken. A search for synonyms led us to travelers instead of explorers and Campfire Travelers was born!
2. Describe the very best day of your life.
Well we're going to be mushy on this one. The very best day has to be back in September 2007 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. We were there for our wedding and about two days before the wedding we had a chill day - this was the one day in the whole trip where we were able to just relax. Soak up the sun, snorkel, eat, just enjoy our time, and forget the wedding details. It was perfect.
3. What is the most exotic food you've ever eaten?
Mandy - one day in Paris, a friend of my mom's was our guide and took Mom and me to this little hole in the wall Middle Eastern restaurant - I could never get back there and I don't know the name. A huge platter of food was set in front of us and all he said was don't ask, just eat. It was amazing.
Jason - I've tried squirrel. That was interesting.
4. Tell about a place you remember because of it's smell.
Mandy - good question! Probably Southern California beaches. I was born and raised in SoCal, so the beaches are a piece of me. Can't forget that smell.
Jason - Aria in Las Vegas. They pump in this amazing vanilla smell throughout the hotel. I wish I could bottle it up for home.
5. Have you ever been skydiving? Where?
Mandy - no. I'm not against it, but Murphy's Law really is my life, so I just avoid skydiving.
Jason - no. No real desire.
6. How does adventure/the outdoors/or travel define you?
Mandy - adventure, nature, and travel have always been a part of my life. I've been traveling since I was tiny and I definitely have that wanderlust spirit. My goal for the boys is for them to experience as much as they can before they leave home and then pass the same spirit to their kids.
Jason - I grew up on a farm in Iowa, so being outdoors in openness was my backyard and we made our own adventures. But Mandy really taught me to appreciate travel and exploration.
7. If money were no object, where would your parents want to travel with you?
Mandy - Hawaii. They've been a million times and I never have! My mom and I have always talked about an Italy trip too.
Jason - my mom wants to go on a cruise, I would like to be able to take her on one.
8. Talk about a scary experience you've had while wandering.
Mandy - back to Paris - I understand about two words of French and late one night on the Metro just as the doors are closing a man runs in and starts screaming I-don't-know-what and then runs up to me and shoves his hat in my face. My look of terror eventually made him walk away. Obviously he was looking for money, but I was so confused at the time I didn't know what to do.
Jason - my first time on a commercial airplane I was traveling with Mandy and I was really nervous. We were in a rush and I sailed through TSA, but she got held up and sent me onto the gate. Before I knew it they were announcing the door was about to shut and Mandy was still not on the plane. Just as I stood up to freak out Mandy hopped through the door and they closed it right behind her. Now, I never leave her behind.
9. What do you worry about the most with blogging?
You hear all those stories about people breaking into your home when you're on vacation because you talked about it on social media, but we really want to share those traveling moments. So we have a house (and dog) sitter and security system.
10. What post have you written that you want the whole world to see?
We're planning on recaping our visits to the National Parks and Monuments we've been to. Our passion for the National Park System is probably what we want to share the most.
11. Chocolate or Chips?
Mandy - chips.
Jason - chocolate.
Thank you Michelle for the questions! That was fun!
